"Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." β 1 Corinthians 10:31
Science, history, and lived experience all point to the same truth β faith changes everything.
Neuroscientists at Harvard Medical School found that regular prayer and meditation physically thicken the prefrontal cortex β the part of the brain tied to focus, compassion, and emotional regulation. Faith isn't just spiritual; it literally shapes your mind.
A 2016 Harvard study tracking 75,000+ adults found that people who attended religious services regularly had a 33% lower mortality rate than those who didn't β linked to stronger social bonds, sense of purpose, and reduced depression.
"The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me."
Psalm 28:7Research from the University of Michigan found that people who believe their life has meaning and purpose are more resilient under pressure, recover faster from setbacks, and demonstrate higher long-term achievement β the very thing faith provides.
With over 2.4 billion believers worldwide β roughly 31% of the global population β Christianity is the most widely practiced religion on earth. The message of grace, redemption, and purpose has crossed every culture, language, and generation.
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord β plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11Estimated at 5β7 billion copies printed, the Bible has outsold every other book in recorded history β and continues to be the most distributed text on the planet, translated into over 3,500 languages.
Studies from Stanford University's Forgiveness Project show that people who actively practice forgiveness β a cornerstone of the Christian faith β experience lower blood pressure, reduced anxiety, stronger immune systems, and deeper personal relationships.
Psychologists at UC Davis found that people who regularly practice gratitude β giving thanks, journaling blessings, praying β report 25% higher life satisfaction, sleep better, exercise more, and show greater empathy toward others. "Give thanks in all circumstances." β 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Mannuel's story didn't begin with advantages. His first three months of life were spent in an incubator β doctors told his family he might not survive. He did. And that early fight became the defining pattern of everything that followed.
Raised as his young mother's third child, he grew up in a home shaped by instability. His biological father was absent β not by choice in the way some might assume, but because he was caught with drugs and deported. Gone. That was the reality. No anger, no blame β just an empty chair and a boy who had to figure out what it meant to become a man without one. That wound ran deep, but it also planted something in Mannuel: a hard, unmovable determination to choose a different path.
At four years old, a stepfather entered the picture. The family had its moments β food on the table, a roof overhead β but volatility was always nearby. Drug involvement cast a shadow over the household, and life moved in unpredictable cycles. "There were highs and lows," Mannuel recalls. "Some days we shopped at Payless; other days we were at the mall."
The turning point came through basketball. He walked into The Salvation Army Red Shield looking for a pickup game β and found something he hadn't known he was searching for: a place to belong.
There, he met Salvation Army Officer Lieutenant Dustin Rowe β a devoted husband and father who became one of Mannuel's first real spiritual mentors. Rowe's example didn't just point Mannuel toward church. It showed him what a faith-driven, family-centered life actually looked like up close.
"He showed me the love of God. That changed everything."
β Mannuel Barragan ValenciaToday, keeping God at the center has steadied his spirit, sharpened his focus, and brought alignment to every area of his life β his health, his goals, his finances. He's quick to give credit where he believes it belongs.
"God is the reason I've been able to keep moving forward."
β Mannuel Barragan ValenciaNow 26, Mannuel is engaged and preparing to welcome his son, Messiah, into the world. He owns a home. He invests. He operates two businesses β milestones that once seemed completely out of reach from where he started.
He sums it all up simply:
"All glory to God."His hope is that others β especially young people searching for solid ground β find the same community and mentorship he found at the Red Shield. "Come by, hang out, and be part of what's happening on the south side."

"Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe."β 1 Timothy 4:12
This verse reminds me that anyone can thrive β and that we're all called to be a good example for everyone around us, no matter where we started.
